“When carving this figure, I was influenced by the postures of classical sculptures, where the line of the shoulders is in opposition to the hips, or ‘contrapposto’. I wanted the gesture to involve her whole body — 360 degrees. So any way that the viewer turns the figure, there is movement and life and expression. I look to things that bring joy, especially in difficult times.”
